The Center for the Development of Civil Society was established in November 2002 but was only registered by the Corporate Affairs Commision in March 2004. The CDCS was established with the following vision, mission and objectives.

::Vision
Be a virile source of strategic thinking on civil society and a leading custodian of the sector’s collective knowledge.

::Mission
Re-engineering and repositioning the Civil Society sector as the frontline advocate of the poor and the promoter of public good.

::Objective
Raise and sustain the profile of the civil society sector
Promote the independence and integrity of the sector
Promote high standard of ethics and accountability in the sector
Promote and facilitate the development of the sector’s human resources
Promote the expansion of the sector’s resource base
Promote the culture of collective organizing, networking and coalition building in the sector.
Promote information sharing and maintain a library and a website on the sector
Promote the ethos of voluntarism in society
Promote civil society partnership with government and the private sector in deepening Nigerian democracy and eradicating poverty
